Desert Hunter

The CD I have is one of those that was distributed with one of their e-callers.  The CD is defective with various duplications, 20 differently named files that are all the same sheep, another dozen that are all the same goat, a score that were silent, and another dozen that were scrambled combinations of sounds. It's actually worse; there are more than a hundred that need some serious sorting out or replacement.  The southern end of this page was a mess.  Anyone who pays for a caller and gets this same production CD as their sole sound source would be angry.  However, W-R has another list of sounds available for download at their website, Western-Rivers.com.  There is some overlap between the CD and the web sounds but the file names don't match up very well.

Similar to the other sound lists that appear here, I only reviewed the sounds I thought might have use hunting western predators. Check out the 14 sounds I picked with 3 or 4 stars and with a good dose of woodcraft, you'll probably call some game.   Any serious predator caller is already going to have some other sounds of proven utility, but if you are new to the game and only have this set from WR, you might want to upgrade with some of those from the top 120 list.

I'm working on a new table for W-R, but honestly, there are 323 files on the CD and another 500 on the website.  It would take another 20-40 hours to download, compare, re-name, and analyze all these files.  Parsing the bad files, 128Mbps MP3 files to start with, is a wasted effort.  There isn't enough overhead left in these compressed files.  Seriously, it might take another 100 hours to finish them all off.  I'd still like to sort out the gray fox, red fox, squirrel, and a few other distress sounds for which my file copies are misnamed, duplicated, or missing, just so the W-R users who might read those don't feel abandoned.   I've already put in an 8 hour day just on the W-R sounds and for now, that is the end of the effort.

There are a lot of sounds here.  However my intent and analysis has been from the beginning pointed squarely at any caller's utility in hunting western predators, mainly coyotes.  I suppose I could get by with the W-R chicken and the mouse and make hay.  However, I know from experience that I can win a contest with just a few sounds, 2 great birds, 3 or 4 excellent rabbits, and a solid coaxer.  That's all it takes.  If I can't find those in this long list, then something is lacking and no matter how long the list is, it's not long enough.  Look hard and you'll find a few that will call some of the coyotes here.
