Coyotes: Predator & Survivor is a fact-filled book about the governments' and sheepmens' wars against the coyote. The book contains a thorough discussion of the methods they used, aerial hunting, den hunting, snares, traps, dogs, calling to the gun, and poisons like 1080 and strychnine and an evaluation of the effectiveness of each. The author also evaluates the effect of coyote predation on game bird and animal populations, especially deer and antelope. The book also discusses the effect of bounties and the relationship between fur prices and the historical harvest of coyote furs from the 30's up to 1981 when the book was written. In the end, you can't help but be amazed that so many could fight so hard, for so long, and use so many methods in the attempt to eradicate this 30 pound predator, and actually lose the war.
Charles Cadieux was a professional wildlife manager for over 30 years.
